RCMP warn of pharmacy phone scam

Morinville – RCMP are warning of a phone scam that could be making the rounds. Last Friday RCMP received a complaint from a resident who received a call from someone pretending to be from Guardian Drugs or another pharmacy. The caller told the intended victim their prescription was being held until they gave the caller their credit card and other personal information.

Constable Yelena Avoine said the Morinville Detachment has received only one complaint of the phone scam, but felt it was important to make the public aware of the possibility for others to be called.

“I did some research and it’s a scam that has been seen before; however, it’s the first report we’ve received it in Morinville,” she said, adding that attempts to trace the complainants call were unsuccessful.

Avoine said the RCMP believe the best way to combat this type of crime is through public education. She cautions people to be wary of any unsolicited phone calls where the caller attempts to extract personal information. Information on the latest phone scams can be found at www.phonebusters.com.
