Morinville Jets to benefit from Servus scholarships

Morinville – With the Morinville Jets fall camp just a month away, the club will be keeping its eyes open for those players who will give the Jets a successful season. But one local financial institution is looking to ready some of those players for a successful future outside of hockey.

Servus Credit Union in downtown Morinville has just made a three-year commitment to provide two annual $500 scholarships to Morinville Jets players, an award that will begin retroactively with the 2009-2010 season.

Le Tour de l’ Alberta

The Edmonton and Bicycle Touring club will be descending on Morinville this Sunday for their annual Le Tour de l’ Alberta bike ride, a 20-, 50-, 100-, and 185-kilometre tour through various communities within Sturgeon County. This year’s event kicks off from the Ray McDonald Sports Centre and winds its way through the County, returning to Morinville for a celebratory feast.

Legal passes bylaw to outsource assessment reviews

Legal – Council unanimously passed a new bylaw at its July 19 regular meeting, allowing the town to use the services of the Capital Region Assessment Services Commission (CRASC) for its assessment review hearings. Under the service, CRASC would provide Legal with trained assessment review board panellists to facilitate complaint hearings.

Local print shop encouraging recycling

Morinville – Although there is no limit to the colour combinations Steve and Denise Hunter can print in, the couple and their staff are shifting their focusing to green this week. Hunters Print & Copy in downtown Morinville is now an official recycling centre for ink and toner cartridges.

Denise Hunter said the business was recently approached by an Edmonton recycling firm who offered to come to Morinville to take empty ink and toner cartridges off their hands, an idea both she and Steve thought was a good one.

Legal FCSS Coordinator Ruthann Weeks told council the program ran strictly as an after school program three days per week last school season, but she wished to expand the program to cover the entire school week, something feedback on last year’s program indicated there was a desire for. Edson – Travis Edward Vader, the person of interest in the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann has been remanded in custody until his next appearance in court July 27 on matters unrelated to the McCann investigation. Vader’s lawyer appeared for him in Edson court this morning on those matters.

Base playgrounds benefit from County grant

CFB Edmonton – With the installation of new playground equipment completed, three playgrounds were officially reopened July 20, a rejuvenation made possible through a $250,000 grant from Sturgeon County. The quarter million in funding was granted last fall through the County’s Capital Agricultural/Recreation Facility Development Grant (CARF), a five-year program started in 2006 to support leisure and fitness facilities in the hamlets, towns and city that make up Sturgeon County.

RCMP arrest person of interest in McCann case

Edmonton – A 38-year-old man wanted on a number of outstanding warrants was arrested without incident this morning at a rural residence outside Niton Junction. The Edmonton RCMP Emergency Response Team together with the Edmonton City Police Tactical Unit and the Fugitive Apprehension Sheriff Support Team (FASST) arrested Travis Edward Vader early Monday morning.

McCann vehicle found, person of interest sought

Edmonton – RCMP investigators and forensic experts are currently on location where the Hyundai Tucson owned by missing St. Albert couple Lyle and Marie McCann has been discovered. As Police consider the location to be a potential crime scene, they are not releasing the location for that reason.

Earlier this afternoon, RCMP released the photo and name of a person of interest in the McCann case. Police are currently looking for 38-year-old Travis Edward Vader, of no fixed address. […]
