Morinville – Three weeks after receiving news that the province was receiving a $70,000 grant to promote tourism, the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce received word that it has gained accreditation as a visitor information centre.

“We’re very pleased to have met all the criteria for accreditation,” said Chamber President Sheldon Fingler, noting that the accredited status is more than a pat on the back from Travel Alberta.

The new status brings with it highway signage for the Morinville centre, as well as placement in all Travel Alberta literature and on the organization’s website.

All are elements the Chamber is hoping will help them with their goal of generating more tourism to the area and more trade for Morinville’s businesses, something the $70,000 in grant money the Chamber received last late month will be used for.

The local business group, together with BLAHK Consulting, are developing a regional tourism action plan (RTAP), which the Chamber hopes to have finalized in the spring of 2011.

The RAPT is focused around building partnerships within the Morinville region.

Fingler said the Chamber has hired a planning consultant who will seek input from the Town of Morinville, Sturgeon County, Alexander First Nation, Edmonton Garrison, as well as other organizations within the region.

They are also seeking input from the public on what should be promoted in the region.
