Fire tower worker still missing after four years

Hinton – Today marks the fourth anniversary of the disappearance of Stephanie Stewart, a fire tower worker at the Athabasca Lookout Tower, located 25 kilometres northwest of Hinton. Stewart was reported missing Aug. 26, 2006 after failing to report for duty.

After Stewart’s disappearance various divisions of the RCMP and Sustainable Resource Development conducted an extensive ground search of the area, but no sign of her was ever found.

During the initial investigation, RCMP determined that bedding was missing from Stewart’s residence, two pillows with blue pillow cases, a burgundy bed sheet and a duvet cover with a Navajo pattern on it.

Investigators determined that Stewart’s disappearance was not the result of an accident or predator attack, and RCMP are currently investigating her disappearance as a homicide.

Stewart had last spoken to her family on the evening of Aug. 25, 2006.

Stewart is 70 years old and described as being in good physical condition. She is approximately five-foot tall, 100 – 105 pounds with blue eyes and shoulder length grey / auburn hair.

After four years, the RCMP, along with family and friends of Stephanie Stewart, continue to remain hopeful that someone will come forward with information that will assist in solving this case.

RCMP report that every avenue and tip are followed up by RCMP investigators in their attempts to locate Stewart.

The Government of Alberta and the Alberta Union of Public Employees have posted a $20,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in Stewart’s disappearance.
