With the official back-to-school clock set at one minute to midnight, many parents are rubbing their hands and clicking their heels with joy. But although the little ones may be back in class during the week, there is still plenty to do on weekends and evenings over the next couple of weeks.

Red Eye Tournament
The Morinville Minor Slow Pitch Association will be holding its annual Red Eye Tournament this weekend at the Skyline Diamonds. The tournament, which brings ball players from all over, runs through the night with players pitching and catching on the illuminated fields.

Corn Festival this weekend
Prairie Gardens in Bon Accord will be holding its annual corn festival over the Labour Day weekend (Sept. 4 – 6). The family-friendly event offers a wide range of corn-themed activities, including the corn maze, corn eating contest, corny jokes and veggie art.

Highlights of the weekend include the Keith Remple Band, performing Saturday from 1 – 4 p.m. For details on the weekend’s activities, visit www.prairiegardens.org.

School supplies needed
Morinville’s FCSS department is organizing a collection of school supplies for families who are having a hard time providing all the things kids need for the coming school year. Donations can be dropped off at the Town of Morinville’s Community Services Office. Parents who need assistance in getting school supplies for their children can call Amy Dribnenky at 780-939-4361.

Curriculum online
And speaking of school, the province is encouraging parents to take an active role in their children’s education and are providing the resources to support such involvement. The 2010-11 Curriculum Handbooks for Parents are available on the Alberta Education website at www.education.alberta.ca/parents/resources/handbook.aspx.

The Curriculum Handbooks for Parents provide in-depth information on what students are expected to learn at each grade level. The Curriculum Summaries provide concise grade-at-a-glance information and are available for Kindergarten to Grade 12 in General and Catholic versions and in English and French.

Memories sought, prize to be had
With the summer break all but over, the Town of Morinville is looking for residents to submit their favourite family activity from the summer. Whether it was a family camping trip, vacation or a quiet time at home, if it promoted quality family time together, Amy Dribnenky, Morinville’s Family Community Support Services coordinator, wants to hear about it. And she’s got a family pass to Servus Place to the winner of the competition.

Entries can be dropped off at the Town office or emailed to adribnenky@morinville.ca. Deadline is Sept. 15 at 4:30 p.m.

Centennial Committee looking for members
With the Town’s upcoming 100th anniversary fast approaching, Morinville is looking for committee members to help plan and organize the centennial celebrations. Those interested in learning more can do so Sept. 8 in the Soeteart Room, second floor of the Morinville Town Offices.
