Morinville – At its last regular meeting before the fall municipal election, Morinville Town Council unanimously approved community grant applications put forth by two local sport groups. Morinville Fun Team Hockey and Morinville Senior Boys Basketball Association both submitted grant requests in the amount of $2,500 and both groups were green lighted by council to receive the funds.

The community grants are issued quarterly and the two sports groups were the only organizations who put forth requests during the third quarter.

Council heard Fun Team Hockey is getting set to start its fourth season in Morinville providing a weekly opportunity for girls and boys to develop hockey skills and enjoy the game apart from participating in minor hockey. Fun Team’s grant request of $2,500 was to assist the organization with start up costs for the season, expenditures that include the purchase of jerseys, membership with Fun Team Alberta and weekly ice rental fees.

Morinville Senior Boys Basketball Association was looking for $2,500 from the Town to help off-set the costs of bringing the senior team to St. Petersburg, Florida for a basketball tournament. Although tied to Morinville Community High School, the association is open to all high school-aged youth in Morinville and plays basketball during and outside the high school basketball season.

Morinville has allocated a total of $27,500 for its 2010 Community Grant program. A total of $18,125 has been given out to groups located or operating in Morinville thus far this year, including the $2,500 each to Fun Team Hockey and Morinville Senior Boys Basketball Association. $9,375 is available to community groups for the fourth quarter intake of applications.

Application deadline for the fourth quarter is Nov. 30.
