Changes at local garage lead to technician search

Mechanic and co-owner of Morin’s Auto Service Melissa Morin is planning to retire from working under the hood to take on the day-to-day operation of the garage and towing businesses. The change has prompted the busy shop to look for an apprentice automotive technician.

Morinville – After seven years as an automotive mechanic, Melissa Morin is retiring from the lift and wrench to take on the full time administrative duties of running Morin’s Auto Service, the family-owned business Melissa and her brother Joel run. But there is more to the decision than simply needing to devote more time to the books and less to the shop. Morin recently got engaged and is looking to spend more time on family life and her duties as a director with the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce.

The shift in focus and responsibilities has left the popular local garage searching for an automotive technician who can work on the wide variety of automobiles that come through the busy shop.

Morin said the shop is hoping to find a third or fourth year apprentice who is innovative and capable of working independently. Although Joel Morin is remaining on board as a technician, his duties are split between repairing vehicles and towing them. Morin said the tow truck component of the business is busy as well.

“It’s preferable that we get someone with experience on multiple makes and models,” Morin said, noting the candidate would need to be personable to maintain the shops reputation for how it deals with its customers.

Morin attributes the business of the shop to a growth in Morinville’s population and the business’ reputation. The shop has been particularly busy of late getting cars ready for winter and doing out of province inspections for military families who’ve recently moved to the area.

It is a business that Morin does not anticipate slowing down, hence the need to find a qualified technician to join the family-run shop.

Morin’s brother, Joel, said they are hoping to attract a younger, hard working technician that doesn’t mind an automotive career that is varied rather than repetitive as it could be in a dealership shop.

“It’s interesting because you can actually have more diverse vehicles that you’re working on instead of at a dealership where you’re doing the same thing over and over again,” Joel said. “It gets repetitive and boring. I actually have to think every day.”
