Edmonton – Members of the provincial law enforcement community will gather at the Alberta Legislature grounds along side Lieutenant Governor Donald Ethell, Premier Ed Stelmach, Solicitor General and Minister of Public Security Frank Oberle, family members and the public Sept. 26 to commemorate the contributions of the 96 men and women who have died in the line of duty in Alberta since 1876.

“We are grateful to the men and women who every day put their lives on the line to ensure the safety of Albertans and their communities,” said Premier Ed Stelmach in a release Friday. “This day serves as an opportunity to reflect on their lives and express our gratitude for their ultimate sacrifice.”

This year’s ceremony recognizes and adds the names Constable Chelsey Robinson and Forest Ranger and Game Guardian Jacob Howard Pegg to the list of police and peace officers who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving Albertans.

Constable Robinson of the Stony Plain Detachment was killed while on duty June 21 of this year in a traffic collision while looking for a suspected impaired driver.

Forest Ranger and Game Guardian Pegg was killed while on duty on Jan. 21, 1949, while employed by the provincial department of Lands and Mines. Pegg died from carbon monoxide poisoning when his vehicle became stuck in a snow bank. He was recently confirmed for inclusion after a review of historical records.

The ceremony, which takes place at 1 p.m. at the band shell at the Alberta Legislature south grounds, will begin with a parade starting near the bus terminal on 107 Street just south of 99 Avenue, and travels south on 107 Street to the ceremony site.

There, family members of fallen officers will be joined by police, peace officer and Alberta government representatives to commemorate the fallen officers, and lay wreaths at the police and peace officer memorial, the Pillar of Strength.

The day coincides with the national Police and Peace Officers’ Memorial Day ceremony held on Parliament Hill in Ottawa.
