RCMP put the brakes on unsafe drivers over the weekend

Edmonton – Operation Impact made quite an impact over the Thanksgiving Weekend. The province-wide initiative resulted in 2,258 traffic-related charges.

As has been the case in other holiday weekend campaigns, speeders made up the bulk of the charges. Between Oct. 8 and Oct. 11, RCMP Traffic Services and Alberta Sheriffs issued 1,202 speeding violations, approximately one third of the 3,317 speeding tickets issued over the Labour Day long weekend.

Although speeding violations were significantly lower than the September long weekend, impaired driving charges were up. A total of 112 impaired driving charges were issued throughout the province over the weekend as well as an additional 55 24-hour suspensions. Labour Day saw 64 impaired charges and 19 24-hour suspensions.

Other charges issued over the Thanksgiving Day weekend included 414 seatbelt and child restraint infractions and 74 intersection infractions.

Now that the long weekend is over, drivers still need to make sure they are following the laws. During October, RCMP and Sheriffs and their road safety partners are targeting unbelted drivers and passengers. Each month police focus on a different aspect of traffic safety.
