Morinville elects its six councillors

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Voters went to the polls Monday to choose six of 10 candidates to serve on Morinville Town Council for the next three years. After Morinville’s mayor and council were acclaimed last election, voters were pleased to not only have an election this time but also 10 candidates to choose from. The last time Morinville had an election was 2004, during which two candidates ran for mayor and six for council.

In all, six newcomers joined four incumbents in the 2010 race, each spending the past four weeks getting their messages out in a variety of ways. Some opted for the time-honoured tradition of pounding the pavement and pounding on doors, others took to the Internet to spread the word on social media sites, including FaceBook and Twitter. Others did both.

When the ballots were counted Monday night, incumbent councillors Gordon Boddez, Paul Krauskopf and Ben van De Walle were chosen together with political newcomers Lisa Holmes, Nicole Boutestein and David Pattison to serve on Town Council over the next term.

The breakdown of votes was as follows:

  1. 1,088 Gordon Boddez
  2. 1,050 Paul Krauskopf
  3. 1,007 Lisa Holmes
  4. 0,913 Nicole Boutestein
  5. 0,812 David Pattison
  6. 0,777 Ben Van De Walle
  7. 0,758 Donna Phinney
  8. 0,683 Jackie Luker-Chevalier
  9. 0,672 Kerry Knight
  10. 0,593 Lucie Roy

Morinville’s new council will be sworn in with Mayor Bertschi this Friday Oct. 22 at 2 p.m. The Honourable Ken Kowalski, speaker of the Legislative Assembly and Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA, will swear in each of the council members. The event will be followed by an open house and an organizational meeting will be held at 3:30 p.m. where council members will be appointed to a number of committees.

The swearing in and open house takes place in Council Chambers at St. Germain Plaza (10125 – 100 Avenue.)

Editor’s Note: election results are not official until four days after the election.
