Chamber celebrates its high rollers in style

Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce President Sheldon Fingler got in the Las Vegas spirit for Thursday night's Chamber Gala. This year's event carried a casino theme.

Morinville – It was a night of high honours, high rollers and high stakes poker Thursday night as the Morinville and District Chamber of Commerce gathered at the Parish Hall to hand out its 2010 business awards.

Set in the midst of Small Business Week, the Chamber recognized Morinville and area’s business success stories and recognized its long term members.

This year’s event carried a casino theme, a motif that struck the capacity crowd of local business people the moment they walked through the door.

The evening’s catered meal was followed by a short set from Edmonton comedian Jordan Chzowski, the presentation of awards and a play money casino of poker and black jack. Participants could cash in their poker chips for raffle tickets to win one of several prizes.

Seven business awards were presented this year, in addition to a number of milestone recognitions.

This year’s recipient of the non-profit organization of the year was the Morinville Public Library.

Crack Masters received the Home Based Business of the Year award and the Small Business of the Year honour was bestowed upon The Flower Stop.

Kanga & Roos Child Care Center received the Medium Sized Business of the Year award and the Large Business of the Year Award went to Morinville Vision Care.

Joel Chevalier of Investors Group was chosen as this year’s recipient of the Community Service Award for his efforts in revitalizing and expanding the St. Jean Baptiste Festival this past summer.

In addition to the business of the year awards, a number of local businesses received milestone recognition. Servus Credit Union was honoured by the Chamber for having celebrated 70 years in Morinville. Five year Chamber membership milestones were presented to Cardiff Golf and Country Club, Friends and Neighbours Restaurant, Professional Realty Group, Tricon / Castle Building Centre, the Redez-Vous Centre and Morinville Alliance Church. Ten year milestones were presented to Peterson Krochak Barristers and Solicitors and the Sturgeon Foundation. The Morinville Business Centre and the Town of Morinville both received 20 year milestones and Morinville Scotia Bank and Frontier Honda / RV City were recognized for 30 years of membership in the Chamber.
