Alexander First Nation – The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) have been called in to investigate the Morinville RCMP after an officer fired his weapon and a 26-year-old man was wounded.

Late Tuesday afternoon, Morinville RCMP received a call about a family disturbance on the Alexander First Nation. RCMP officers responded to the call, but while investigating the family disturbance the call was changed to a weapons complaint.

Morinville Staff Sergeant Mac Richards said he was unable to discuss the details of the investigation but was able to say the injured male was taken to hospital with non life-threatening injuries.

“They’re handling the investigation,” Richards said, adding ASIRT often become involved when Alberta’s police are involved in an incident that involves serious injury or death. “We’re cooperating with them and supporting them.”

Richards said no members of his detachment were hurt during the incident and that no charges have been laid in the incident that led to the call. “That’s still under investigation,” he said.

Calls to ASIRT to discuss the incident were not immediately returned.
