Morinville – The Town of Morinville’s Community Bus might have been groaning under the weight of generosity Friday night as it hauled away this year’s collection of food donations for the Morinville Food Bank Society and the Knights of Columbus’ Christmas Hamper program.

The bus spent two days as a receptacle for non-perishable food supplies. Morinville schools Notre Dame elementary and École Georges P. Vanier School deposited the food they had been collecting over the past week or two on Thursday and the bus was parked at Morinville’s No Frills and Sobeys locations Friday morning and afternoon, allowing residents and community groups to make their donations to the worthy cause.

In total 5,608 lbs of non-perishable food items, cleaning supplies and personal care items were collected from the schools and community.

Additionally, $1,670 in cash and gift cards were collected for the charities. No Frills employees Michelle Hills and Dallas Fleming presented a $100 No Frills gift card to the Morinville Food Bank Society. Rotarian Kathy Sandmeier presented Henry Lamoureux of the Morinville Knights of Columbus with a cheque for $500 for their Christmas Hamper program. Servus Credit Union Branch Manager Kevin Wunsch presented the food bank with a cheque for $1,050.

The latter presentation was matching dollars to funds raised during the Morinville & District Chamber of Commerce 2010 Golf Tournament. During the annual tournament, Chamber members collected $350 in non-perishable food items for the food bank. That amount was matched by Servus Credit Union and Alliance Pipeline, each of whom contributed $350. Servus Credit Union matched the combined total, presenting another cheque Friday afternoon.
