Morinville – Past generations of Morinville Jets kicked off Morinville’s Lite Up the Nite Christmas Festival weekend by lighting up the scoreboard at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre. More than three dozen former Jets took to the ice in home and away jerseys playing for either Team Welsby or Team Maslyk, teams named for former Jet coaches Tom Welsby and Terry Maslyk.
As in past alumni contests, the battle was a close one between the two sides of former players. This year’s victory went to Team Welsby who pulled off an 11-9 win over Team Maslyk. This year’s most valuable players, selected by MorinvilleNews.com, went to Team Welsby’s Steve Noel and Team Maslyk’s Chris Arcand.
Former Morinville Jet and Alumni Association President Dan Blackburn, who wore an away jersey in Friday night’s alumni game, said he was pleased with the response from the alumni.
“I think this year we had a good turnout,” Blackburn said, adding there were some last minute changes two hours prior to game time. “Overall, it ended up being a close game, which is what we were looking for. I think the guys found it really exciting towards the end, and, as usual, the guys were having a good time.”
The annual alumni game is the Morinville Jets major fundraiser of the year. Each year the alumni pay a $65 registration fee to play in the game, money that helps fund the current Jets’ season in the Capital Junior Hockey League.
