Jets defeated in overtime

Morinville – Wednesday night’s 5-4 overtime loss to the Edmonton Mustangs (10-10-3) provided the Morinville Jets with one point for their evening’s efforts, and brings the club’s record to 11-9-4 on the season.

After struggling to stay at least at .500 hockey for a large part of the season, the Jets are starting to achieve some much-needed points heading into the CJHL home stretch. The Jets have but 14 games left in the 38-game regular season.

The Jets have been defeated twice in their last five outings and both were losses after regulation play, earning them eight out of a possible 10 points. Although the Jets succumbed to the North Edmonton Red Wings in a shootout that extended to five rounds Nov, 26, Wednesday night’s road game was decided in the closing minutes of overtime.

In that contest the Jets dominated the puck in the opening frame, picking up two unanswered goals during the period, both scored on the power play.

Although the club failed to ripple the Mustang’s mesh during the middle frame, they allowed but one goal during the period, giving the Jets a 2-1 lead heading into the third period.

The Jets picked up another two during the third; both were scored on the powerplay, but allowed the Mustangs to answer back with three goals to bring the contest to a 5-5 tie. Two of Edmonton’s third period goals were scored with Jets sitting in the sin bin.

With five minutes on the clock and a game on the line, the Jets were unable to capitalize on two minutes of powerplay advantage when Mustang Scott Evans took a two-minute penalty for tripping. Four seconds after Evans came out of the box, David Penner scored an unassisted goal for the Mustangs, ending the contest and the Jets’ chance at coming home with two points.

The Jets have one game remaining this week – Sunday’s home ice contest against the 1-20-2 Stony Plain Flyers, currently the bottom-ranked team in the Capital Junior Hockey League. Game time is 2 p.m. at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
