County meets snow removal targets

Sturgeon County – The dumping of snow that gripped the Edmonton region over the past few days met its match from the Sturgeon County Transportation department.

The County reports all main roads, non-main roads and subdivisions were cleared by Saturday, Dec. 18, meeting all the County’s targets for snow clearing.

Sturgeon County had 13 graders, four trucks, one loader and one skid steer working long hours Dec. 16 and 17 to get roads cleared. Smaller work crews were out Dec. 18 to finish off the County’s subdivisions.

Sturgeon County’s goal is to clear all snow within 72 hours of the end of snowfall; no easy task given the County maintains 180 kilometres of oiled roads, 100 kilometres of paved roads and 1,450 kilometres of gravelled roads.

“Our dedicated and efficient Transportation Department worked very hard last week to clear the snow from all the County Roads,” said Ian McKay, General Manger of Infrastructure in a release Monday.

Transportation crews began work on pushing the snow back from main roads, service roads and cleaning up of all areas Monday. Sturgeon County asks the public to exercise extreme caution when encountering snow removal operations.
