Sturgeon County – A public hearing is scheduled for Jan. 25 to offer Sturgeon County residents the opportunity to provide input on a proposed bylaw that would regulate parking within County boundaries.

Council gave unanimous approval to first reading of a parking bylaw for Sturgeon County during its Nov. 9 regular meeting, but is holding a public hearing seeking input prior to giving the bylaw second and third reading.

The proposed bylaw is a response to a Cardiff Pittsburgh resident who brought her concerns to County Council in august of 2010. During that meeting the resident addressed the issue of recreational and commercial vehicles parking on the roadways in Cardiff Echoes and Cardiff Pittsburgh, and the potential dangers such parking created to motorists and pedestrians.

Under the proposed bylaw, fines for various infractions would range from $100 to $200, a marked increase from the $30 to $50 fines that exist under the County’s current bylaw.

Once passed, commercial vehicles would be eligible for a $100 fine if parked on a highway for more than eight hours, while non-commercial vehicles would receive the same fine after 36 hours. Parking a trailer not attached to a vehicle could result in an immediate $100 fine. Additionally, vehicles in excess of 4,800 kilograms could receive a $200 fine if park in unauthorized areas.

Participating in the Process
Residents may examine the proposed bylaw at the Sturgeon County offices between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Written comments may be submitted to the Legislative Officer at the Sturgeon County Centre any time prior to 4:30 p.m. Jan. 20. Residents may also register to speak in advance of the hearing by contacting Nanette Best, Legislative Officer, at 780-939-8377 no later than 4:30 p.m. Jan. 20, 2011.

The public hearing will be held in Sturgeon County Council Chambers Jan. 25 at 6 p.m.

  1. The situation needs to be addressed within the Town of Morinville as well. Ever try to park in an area like Notre Dame Estates or South Glen? Where the trailers and RV’s are on display in everyones driveway forcing their vehicles onto the street? Much less, try to back out of someone’s driveway in there? And it’s not just those developments, it’s all over Town. With modern development plans based on zero lot lines, minimal setbacks and garages roughly two car lengths from the street we probably need to review current bylaw and policies. I do know St. Albert has different restriction regarding RV storage/parking within residential areas… I’ll have to investigate.
