Morinville – The Jets returned home from Tuesday night’s road game with their second defeat in as many games. Last night’s 4-1 loss brought the Jets record to 14-13-5, just one game above .500 hockey.
The Jets only goal of the contest was scored with eight-and-a-half minutes left in the first period, bringing them to a 1-1 tie with the Royals. But a slashing penalty for the Jets gave the Royals an opportunity to pocket a powerplay goal before the end of the frame, giving them a 2-1 lead.
Although Jets backstop Mike Saunders blocked most attempts to ripple his mesh, he allowed one more to pass in each of the remaining periods, while the Jets offenses failed to capitalize on any of their chances.
The Jets now stand in fifth place in the Capital Junior Hockey League’s West Division. Although tied with St. Albert at 33 points, the Merchants have played three fewer games than the Jets.
With six games left in the regular season, the Jets need every point they can get. If outcomes are similar to past contests this season, the Jets could pick up six points from their contests against the Merchants, Icemen and Hawks. But recent efforts leave even those contests in doubt.
The Jets next game is Sunday against the 12-14-4 Edmonton Mustangs. Game time is 2 p.m. at the Ray McDonald Sports Centre.
