Legal – Wednesday night’s make up game against the Onoway Ice Dogs originally scheduled for Jan. 9 ended in a 7-3 decision for the visiting Ice Dogs. The contest was the fifth time the Vipers took on Onoway this season and the fourth time they were defeated.
Despite the loss, the Vipers put forth a strong effort, particularly in the opening frame which ended 1-0 in Legal’s favour, the goal scored in the final minute of the period.
But Onoway reversed the lead by the end of the second period, leading the Vipers 4-3. The final period saw the Vipers denied on each attempt to ripple Onoway’s mesh while the Ice Dogs plucked away goal by goal to end the contest 7-3.
Wednesday night’s defeat brought the Vipers’ record to 10-8-0 and positions them in fourth place in the NCHL standings, one point ahead of the Edson Ice (8-7-3) and seven points behind the third-ranked Slave Lake Winter Hawks (13-4-1).
The Vipers take to the road this weekend to face off against both teams. The Vipers will have the opportunity to close the gap against Slave Lake Friday night and an opportunity to widen the gap on Edson Saturday.
The Vipers’ next home game is set for Jan. 29 when they will take on the NCHL’s top-ranked Drayton Valley Wildcats (17-2-0).
