Edmonton – Alberta Justice announced Monday they will quash all convictions for Speed-on-Green tickets issued in Edmonton from November 2009 up to and including Jan. 14 due to concerns about the reliability of the City’s intersection safety cameras. Motorists who received a Speed-on-Green ticket during this time frame and subsequently paid the fine will be refunded.
“This is the right action to take,” Minister of Justice and Attorney General Alison Redford said in a release Monday morning. “Our first concern is the fair administration of justice, and we cannot proceed with legal action when there is doubt about the accuracy of the city’s Speed-on-Green ticket technology.”
The move follows the City of Edmonton and Edmonton Police Service’s Jan. 14 announcement it is cancelling the distribution of Speed-on-Green tickets until further notice. Additionally, the Crown is withdrawing all Speed-on-Green tickets issued in Edmonton currently before the courts.
Approximately 102,700 tickets were paid between November 2009 and Jan. 20, 2011. Alberta Justice is currently working with the City of Edmonton to establish a process and timeline for the refund.
