Vipers earn two points on weekend

Legal – The Vipers picked up two of a possible four points over the weekend, defeating the Athabasca Aces 10-3 on the road Friday night and being shut out 3-0 by the Drayton Valley Wildcats back in Legal the following evening.

The win and loss brought the Vipers record to 11-10-0 and positioned them in fifth spot in the North Central Hockey League Standings.

Saturday night’s home-ice showdown against the Wildcats was to be the Vipers’ final game of the season. However, their road trip to Slave Lake the previous weekend was postponed when the team’s bus hit the ditch in a snow storm.

That contest will be replayed Friday night in Slave Lake and is the last regular season game.

What happens during that contest will determine where the Vipers end up in playoffs. A win against Slave Lake would put the Vipers a point ahead of the Edson Ice in the standings while a loss would keep them where they are, a point behind.

As such, a win against Slave Lake would put the Vipers up against the Athabasca Aces while a loss would pit the Vipers against the Hinton Heat in the first round of playoffs. Neither spot is a bad position for the Vipers. Legal defeated Athabasca three times out of four this season and defeated Hinton in both outings.
