Letter: Morinville Centennial Community Gardens

Dear editor:

This year is Morinville’s 100th anniversary and we invite you to join in the festivities by participating in the Morinville Centennial Community Gardens. This is a return to our roots with a modern twist. Our objective is to promote community spirit, education and provide a place to grow healthy food inexpensively.

Gardening is a great way to provide a healthy inexpensive addition to your table but getting a garden started can be overwhelming, There are so many questions; how do you prepare your site, what if you don’t have a yard or a spot suitable in your yard, what should you plant, how should it be planted, what about fertilizing and watering, what tools are needed? It can be overwhelming.

Joining our community garden is the answer. We have the plots, including raised beds for those that are mobility impaired. We have the tools and we have experienced gardeners who are just waiting to share their knowledge. The cost is nominal and the opportunity to meet new people and experience the great taste of your own fresh produce is unbeatable.

Be one of the first to book your plot. The plots will be located at the Morinville United Church and the cost is $20 a year for a 4 X 8 plot.

This is also an excellent opportunity for teachers or community organizations to get involved and provide a unique learning opportunity for students or club members. If your organization wants to do a community service project you could grow your own produce and contribute it to the food bank. Don’t forget, individuals can also book a spot to grow fresh food for their own table.

Donations of all kind, including tools and labour are always welcome.

Help us make this centennial project a success for this year and many years to come.
