Cardiff Corner topic of special discussion Monday

Morinville – Mayor Lloyd Bertschi, council and administrative staff are being particularly tight lipped about a special discussion to be made in Council Chambers May 16 at 11 a.m.

Initially no comment other than the fact Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Ken Kowalski would be present, details were slowly leaked out between Monday and Friday.

Tuesday after council the mayor announced Transportation Minister Luke Oullette would also be present, increasing speculation the discussion might relate to the notorious corner of Cardiff Road and Highway 2.

That speculation was removed Thursday afternoon when a press release announced the discussion was in fact regarding Cardiff Corner.

Although no other specifics were mentioned in the release, The Honourable Ken Kowalski may have let a bit slip on Morinville’s centennial. While in town for the centennial celebration Apr. 18 Kowalski performed a re-enactment of Morinville’s incorporation as a town. During his ad lib in the character of the politician who delivered the original proclamation to Morinville in 1911, Kowalski ‘s character said he saw another overpass in Morinville’s future.

Whether Monday’s discussion concerning the treacherous corner will be focused on an overpass or some other method remains to be seen, but the fact the two politicians will be present is evidence the corner is on the province’s radar.

Residents are invited to come to council chambers May 16 at 11 a.m. to find out for themselves.
