Sturgeon County – County fire fighters are keeping an upper hand on fires currently burning north of Township Road 560 along the Sturgeon River, between Range Roads 224 and Range 225, south east of Casa Vista.

County Emergency Services crews, air support and Alberta Sustainable Resource Development (SRD) crews are working to hold firebreaks established May 15 when the fires broke out.

“Our resources are actively working this side of the fire and strengthening the guard,” Said Sturgeon County Fire Chief Pat Mahoney in a release Monday afternoon. “Forecasts of high winds and continuing dry conditions are creating challenges for our crews, however, we are confident that we are gaining the upper hand,” said Sturgeon County Fire Chief, Pat Mahoney.

Although the County is not evacuating residents, it is asking that people remain alert. In the event of an evacuation order, Sturgeon County Peace Officers or RCMP will advise affected residents.

The County upgraded its fire advisory to a full fire ban around 9 p.m. last night. The ban prohibits all open fires within Sturgeon County.

No fire permits will be issued during the ban and all previously issued fire permits are now void.

Operators of off-highway vehicles are asked to use extreme caution when driving through wooded areas and to ensure that a spark arrester is attached properly and cleaned of debris.
