Library looking to make a splash with summer reading program

By Stephen Dafoe

Morinville – Although it’s still a month away, the Morinville Public Library is taking registrations for their summer reading program. Running July 4 to Aug. 19, the program offers something fun for children aged 2 to 12 with some special surprises along the way.

“It’s just a good program to keep the kids reading through the summer and to be ready for school in the fall said librarian Cheryl. “They have fun doing it.”

Children are able to take advantage of drop in times where they can play a game one-on-one with the summer reading coordinator. Those who choose to read books have an opportunity to win prizes. The more they read, the more they can win. There are prizes for 15 minute intervals of reading and the prizes get bigger the more they read through the summer.
As in previous years, the Morinville Public Library will be tying their program to the TD Summer reading Program. Last year’s theme took children to the depths of the jungle with the Destination Jungle program. This year’s theme is Splash! Children will be transported over the high seas or just to the local beach with the summer reading program’s water theme.

The program for 2- to 5-year-olds is called Princess Rainbow’s Seaside Adventure, the program for 6- to 12-year-olds is called King Neptune’s Undersea Academy. Both programs will run Mondays and Fridays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesdays the program will run from 2 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 1:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from 5:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.

In addition to games and being able to sign out books, the library will host weekly craft sessions on Tuesdays for the 2-5 age group and Wednesdays for the older children.

Two special days have been set aside for two special guests. Storyteller Kathy Jessup will perform for children July 20 at 2 p.m. and magician Brian Lehr will bring his reading program themed show to the library Aug. 10 at 2 p.m.

This year’s program will take place at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre because the library will be closed while Civic Plaza is renovated.

Cost for the summer reading program is $20 per child and children must have a current library card. Children are not obligated to attend every week and drop in times are set to be flexible for summer schedules.
