Highway 44 collision takes life

Morinville – A multi-vehicle collision on Hwy 44 late Friday afternoon has takent he life of an Edmonton man and sent a 12-year-old girl to hospital by air ambulance.

Morinville RCMP responded to a complaint of a multi-vehicle collision on Hwy 44, two kilometres south of Hwy 651 at approximately 3:50 p.m.. Morinville RCMP, Westlock RCMP, Sturgeon County Fire Department and Sturgeon County Emergency Services also attended the scene.

RCMP believe a north-bound pickup collided with two south-bound vehicles on Hwy 44. All vehicles sustained major damage.

The lone occupant of the north-bound vehicle ( a 41 yr old Male) from Edmonton was pronounced dead at the scene. Two occupants of one of the south-bound vehicles were transported by ambulance to hospital while the third occupant, a 12-year-old female was transported to hospital by STARS air ambulance. The extent of the injuries are not known at this time. The occupants of the second south-bound vehicle were not injured. The name of the deceased driver is not being released at this time.

Hwy 44 north-bound and south-bound are currently closed and will be opened later this evening. Detour routes have been marked.

The investigation is continuing. No charges have been laid at this time. All vehicle occupants were wearing seat belts at the time of the collision.
