Morinville – A Morinville youth has returned to town with second place in the 16th Annual McLennan Ross Sun Junior Golf Tour Championship after coming in at par during competitions held at Wolf Creek Aug. 29. Sturgeon Composite student Bryce Melville’s impressive score of 70 was just two short of his opponent, 15-year-old Tyler Saunders of Glendale, who took top slot in the event with a 68, giving him his second consecutive tour championship.

Melville, in turn, edged out Jesse Teron by one stroke. The Morinville golfer’s next closest rival in overall standings was Matthew McCourt of Drayton Valley who finished the course with a 74.

Melville said he had previously qualified in a Barrhead tournament, one of the legs in the tour, and went on to qualify for the Wolf Creek championship tournament held Monday.

“I knew there was lots of guys there that were tough to beat,” Melville said of his thoughts heading into Monday’s event. “I didn’t really go in it thinking to win it, but I was looking to do well at least.”

Although looking to place well in the tournament of 124 junior golfers assembled from every corner of the province and points in between, the young golfer did not anticipate doing as well as he did. “My goal was to finish in the top 10 or so,” he said.

Melville said he knows Saunders fairly well, having played against him a couple times previously during his junior golf career. But while Saunders proved to be a tough opponent, the course at wolf Creek was equally challenging.

“It’s a really tough course,” Melville said. “Last year I played it and I didn’t do very well in this event. But I came out this year with a positive attitude and just went out there.”

That positive attitude and another season on the links allowed Mellville to whittle his score down from the high-80s in 2010 to a par showing in Monday’s tournament.

Although tours and tournaments are pretty much over for 2011, Melville said he is hoping to qualify for a golf tournament in Florida.
