Morinville – Residents will have the opportunity to enter and explore the world of Geocaching this Sunday. The Town of Morinville will be holding a seminar on the pastime as well as setting experienced geocachers loose on Morinville’s own collection.
“Geocaching is like a world-wide treasure hunt,” said Morinville’s Special Events Coordinator, Peggy Gilchrist. “There are 1.5 million geocaches hidden around the world. It’s a scavenger hunt for a lack of a better way to describe it.”
That scavenger hunt involves people taking a container and putting a log book and a couple trinkets inside the container which is then hidden in a location. The GPS coordinates of that location are then posted on the geocache website available for anyone looking for a navigational adventure to find.
A number of containers have already been hidden in town; however, their GPS locations will not be made live until just before the Sept. 18 event.
“It’s trying to get people out searching their environment,” Gilchrist said of the event, adding a total of 20 have been hidden in Morinville.
Experienced geocachers will be able to begin their quest as soon as the locations are revealed Sunday morning; however, those wishing to find out what Geocaching is all about can take part in a course that will be held at the Morinville Community Cultural Centre at 1 p.m.
“Come, learn what it’s all about,” Gilchrist said, noting GPS units will be available for those who do not have them. “They’ll have a chance to try it out and have time to go out and find some locally.”
After the day of geocaching, everyone is invited back to the Community Cultural Centre for a barbecue at 4:30 p.m. There is no cost for either the Geocaching course or barbecue.
