Morinville – A knock on the door this Saturday could be your chance to help the Morinville Food Bank Society. With Thanksgiving likely to have put a dent in the local charity’s food supplies, members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Morinville area will be collecting food to help restock the food bank.
Bishop Ricky Gatt of the Mission Hill Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints said volunteers from his congregation, which includes about 50 Morinville and area residents, will attempt to reach as many households Oct. 15 as possible.
A flyer is set to be sent to homes on the routes the church will be approaching this weekend, and they are asking people to leave their donations on their porch or doorstep so it is visible from the street.
“A lot of our congregation is out in Morinville and Cardiff area, so we asked Morinville if they needed a hand,” the Bishop said. “They’re quite excited for us to do that.”
The charitable initiation is in keeping with the congregation’s belief that as followers of Jesus Christ, the members try to emulate Jesus by serving their fellow men.
Bishop Gatt said the Latter Day Saints have had great success with food bank drives in the Calgary area and that the same model is now being tried in Edmonton and surrounding areas.
Suggested food items included canned fruits and vegetables, canned fish or meats, jars of peanut butter, bottles of pasta sauce, and boxes of dried pasta. Whatever is donated, the congregation is asking that the items be non-perishable items.
