Sturgeon County workforce is diverse in age and tenure

Sturgeon County – Documents distributed with Council’s first real look at the 2012 budget show Sturgeon County has a total of 229 employees with 174 of those being considered full time equivalent positions.

In graphing 192 of those employees, it has been shown Sturgeon County’s age demographics are diverse. County employees between the ages of 45 to 55 represent the largest percentage of employees at 29.17 per cent. Although 23.44 per cent of County employees are between the ages of 35 and 45, 22.4 per cent fall into the 25 to 35 range. Combined, half Sturgeon’s workforce is between the ages of 25 to 45. Those figures drop for those over 55 and those 20 and under. Those 55 and older account for 17.71 per cent of the County’s workforce. Employees between the ages of 20 and 25 represent 5.73 per cent of the workforce, while those 19 and younger accounted for just 1.56 per cent of County employees.

In terms of longevity, the largest share of County employees (29.17 per cent) has worked for the municipality for two to five years. Another 18.75 per cent have worked for the County for less than two years and another 15.1 per cent have worked for the County for less than one year. Taken together, 63 per cent of the County’s workforce has worked for the municipality for five years or less. County employees who have worked five to 10 years for the municipality represent 15.63 per cent of the workforce, while 10.42 per cent of employees have worked for the County for 10 to 20 years. Another 10.94 per cent have been with the municipality for more than 20 years.

Early budget talks with administration are recommending that four summer work positions will not be utilized next year and two of five full time vacancies will remain unfilled in 2012 as a cost cutting measure. Administration is recommending a two per cent cost of living allowance increase for tis employees.
