Local knights to help the needy

By MorinvilleNews.com Staff

Morinville – The Knights of Columbus are once again taking up the charge to put a smile on the face of local and area families this Christmas. Last year the Catholic fraternal order, with the assistance of local churches and community members, distributed 100 hampers of food and numerous children’s toys and gifts to Morinville families as well as families in Mearns and Riviere Qui Barre.

The knights have already set their barrels around town in the hopes that charitably-minded Morinvillians will drop off non-perishable food and gifts. Drop offs have been established at The Helping Hand Store, Bumper to Bumper / Home Hardware, Our Place (FCSS Town of Morinville), Sobeys, Scotia Bank, Royal Bank, Servus Credit Union and No Frills.

Food donations should be foods that are nutritious; children’s gifts in new or excellent condition and unwrapped. Those wishing to make financial donations can do so by taking cash donations to the office of St. Jean Baptiste Church or making cheques payable to the Knights of Columbus, St. Anne Council. Monies will be used by the knights to purchase potatoes, meat, fresh fruit and other staples for the Christmas hampers. Tax receipts will be issued for monetary donations.

Looking for recipients

While the Knights of Columbus are looking to the public for donations to the cause, they are also looking for families to give hampers to. Individuals and families eligible to receive Christmas hampers are contacted by social services; however, anyone who requires assistance should phone the Town of Morinville at 780-939-4361 or the Drop In Centre at 780-939-3953. Residents who know of a family or individuals in need of assistance are encouraged to contact one of the two numbers prior to Dec. 16, the cut off time. Hampers will be delivered from the Morinville Community Cultural Centre between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. Dec. 19.
