Sturgeon County – Township Road 570 from Opal Road to Highway 38/ Highway 643 will now be called Heartland Drive after County Council voted unanimously Dec. 13 to approve the name change.

The paved major collector road, situated on the north boundary of the Heartland connects Highway 38 to Range Road 224 and is anticipated to see increased traffic volumes due to increased industrial projects.

Sturgeon County traditionally names its paved roads to improve community identity and spirit, and sought input from the community in naming the road. A naming contest generated 15 internal suggestions for the re-naming and 308 participants for the actual voting once the list had been narrowed down to five contenders. Heartland Drive garnered 171 of the 308 votes. Other options in order of votes received were Emerald Road (50 votes), Belle Vista Road (41 votes), Bitumen Way (32 votes), and Progress Road with 14 votes.

Now that the name change has been approved, Sturgeon County will erect four signs and posts on the drive between Range Road 224 and Highway 38 next spring. Material cost is estimated at about $314.
