Morinville – The region’s PC party members went to the polls in Barrhead, Morinville and Westlock Saturday to choose their candidate in the next provincial election. Westlock County Deputy Reeve Maureen Kubinec took the day.

Kubinec will replace long-serving Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Ken Kowalski, who announced Dec. 9 he would not run in the next election. He had indicated last August he would in fact run again; however, decided he would like to retire to private life. When the election is called, Kubinec will run against Wildrose candidate Link Byfield, who received his party’s nomination by acclamation in October of 2010, and the NDP’s Trudy Grebenstein. No Liberal or Alberta Party candidate has been announced in the constituency as of yet.

Kubinec’s win Saturday was over four other candidates: Tim Schultz, Bert Seatter, David Truckey, and Morinville Mayor Lloyd Bertschi, the latter of whom is also one of the candidates for the presidency of the Capital Region Board.
A total of 1,233 ballots were cast.
