Big weekend for MCHS sports

Submitted

Morinville – The MCHS Cheer Team did the school and community proud three times over the weekend.
The team competed at Victoria High School in Edmonton this past Friday night. The already small team of five competed with only four girls, as they had suffered an injury at practice the night before, putting one team mate in a splint for the next four weeks, due to a dislocated and fractured elbow.

However, the girls pulled together as a team and worked harder than ever to rework their routine. The perseverance and determination of these four young athletes was evident as they competed against eight other teams in the Small Varsity division to take home another first place trophy. The team was also awarded the Spirit Stick – which is a huge accomplishment for a team of only five. The Spirit Stick is awarded to the team that shows the most spirit and sportsmanship during a competition.

The next morning the team travelled to Athabasca for Cheerfest / North Central Zones. The girls once again, competing against four other Small Varsity teams, took first place and won a bid to Provincials. Provincials will be held the first weekend of March in Brooks.

Coaching staff for the team is Amanda Mantyka, Vanessa Wolfram and Allison Vickers.

Lady Wolves take tournament

The MCHS Lady Wolves played in the St. Thomas Aquinas Basketball tournament this past weekend. The team played Barrhead in their first game and struggled to score. They did, however, play great defence en route to a 44-32 victory.

In the semi-final the girls battled H.J Cody from Sylvan Lake. The girls played better as they defeated H.J Cody 53-31. Amanda Kluthe was a beast on the boards with 12 rebounds.

In the final against the home town STA Thunder, the Lady Wolves fell behind early and battled back to tie the game 25-25 at the half. In the second half the Lady Wolves dominated the Thunder winning the game 69-43. The team shot a season best 9/13 from the free throw line and were led by a 24 point performance from Rebecca Dubord.

The team has this weekend off before travelling to Lacombe for the next tourney.

In the same tournament the Wolves also took the gold for the boys division. Details were nto available by our deadline.
