Morinville – It was an undefeated season for the Morinville Road Runners Midget Girls team this season. The fourteen girls from Morinville and Sturgeon County began the Edmonton Youth Basketball season back in October and ran through 15 straight wins.

“They play a dynamic style of basketball, very up tempo with constant ball pressure on defense while pushing the ball up the floor, fastbreaking every chance they get,” said Coach Serge Froment. “This style suits these young athletic superstars as they often give up six inches in height to their opposition.”

Froment said the 13- and 14-year-old players accumulated 780 points this season while giving up a league-low 492 points. Running back into the previous season, the girls have won 31 consecutive games.

“What is clearly evident when you watch them is how much being part of the team means to each and every one of them,” Froment said. “Good teams rely on superstars; great teams need every player contributing. We have 14 players who unselfishly give up the ball if a teammmate is in a better scoring position and play absolutely suffocating team defense.”

Froment, who has coached girls basketball for six years, said he is proud of the team’s efforts and progress, and that being raised in good homes with caring parents has made them wonderful teammates and a dream to coach.

Playoff games start on Feb. 25 with provincials following on Mar. 16 and 17. All five Morinville teams will be participating in playoffs in the weeks ahead.
