Mayor loses third race in the past year

Edmonton – Morinville Mayor Lloyd Bertschi’s bid to be the next Capital Region Board (CRB) chair was defeated Thursday morning after St. Albert Mayor Nolan Crouse was elected to the post. The CRB is a provincially-mandated group of municipal leaders in and around Edmonton who work together on areas of common interest.

The defeat follows closely on the heels of Bertschi’s bid to replace long-serving PC MLA Ken Kowalski as the Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock PC Association’s candidate heading into the spring election. Bertschi was one of five candidates for the post, all of whom were defeated by Westlock County Deputy Reeve Maureen Kubinec Jan. 28.

The mayor also sought another term as Alberta Urban Municipalities Association President last year and was defeated by Edmonton Councillor Linda Sloan, who ran afoul of Minister of Municipal Affairs Doug Griffiths last week for comments she allegedly made regarding a connection between Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding and municipalities allegiance to the PCs.
