Morinville – Local scouts are getting ready to spark their torches in honour of Lord Baden-Powell, the founder of the scouting movement. The members of 1st Morinville Scouting will take part in a Torch Light Parade Feb. 22, running from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“This annual event has been hosted in Morinville for many years, and often draws upwards of 200 participants, including the local scouting members, and many groups from surrounding municipalities,” said scout leader Melodie Steele in a press release on the upcoming parade.

In addition to members of 1st Morinville Scouting, members of 12th St. Albert Scouts, 56 Kirk (Edmonton) Scouts and members of the Morinville and District Girl Guides are all scheduled to take to the streets of Morinville in honour of Lord Robert Baden-Powell whose birthday was Feb. 22. Baden-Powell, in addition to being the founder of the Scouting movement, was a lieutenant-general in the British Army, serving in India and Africa from 1876 until 1910. The scouting founder is generally believed to have started the movement in 1907 while on a camping trip with some local youth.

It is in Baden-Powell’s honour that the torches will be lit and the parade will start at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday night, departing from the Community Cultural Centre. The torch-bearing youth will head east on their parade route for two blocks, turn north into Aspen House’s private laneway, proceed east on 101 Avenue for another two blocks, and turn south back into the Community Cultural Centre / MCHS parking lot.

With the parade portion of the evening completed the scouts will hold a formal campfire where they will perform songs, short skits and scouting cheers.

The public are invited to attend the parade in support of local and visiting scouts.
