Morinville – The Morinville Jets still have a few days before entering the second round of playoffs. The club’s regular season first place divisional finish gave the Jets a fist round bye and home ice advantage heading into round 2.

First round playoffs commenced Feb. 15, and as of Feb. 19 only one contest remained undecided. The Spruce Grove Regals and North Edmonton Red Wings will play a third game Wednesday night to determine their best-of-three series.

Other Capital Junior Hockey League first round series were decided in two straight. The Edmonton Royals defeated the Strathcona Bruins 10-4 and 8-6 to earn their spot in the second round. The Edmonton Mustangs also took out the St. Albert Merchants in two straight with a 5-2 and 4-1 victory. In the East Division the Beaumont Chiefs took out the Fort Saskatchewan Hawks with a 7-1 and 5-3 victory.

Just who the Jets will play in the second round will be determined after Wednesday night’s West Division series between the Regals and Red Wings. Second round of playoffs take the teams remaining after the first round and rank them from 1 to 4 according to their regular season point totals. The Jets will take on the fourth-ranked West Division team; the Warriors will take on the third-ranked team.

A Spruce Grove win Wednesday night would put the Jets against the Edmonton Mustangs in the second round. Should the Red Wings take game three of their series, they would play the Jets in round 2.

Round 2 of playoffs could commence this weekend in Morinville. Follow us on Twitter @MorinvilleNews for series 2 updates.
