Morinville – The MCHS Cheer Team returned to school Monday morning with the 2011/2012 Small Varsity Cheer Provincial Championship in their hands. The team travelled to Brooks over the weekend for provincials and competed Mar. 2 and 3 against six other teams, all of whom had two to three times as many athletes as the Morinville team.
“After their performance on Friday afternoon the girls were leading the small varsity division by 0.9 of a point,” said coach Amanda Mantyka in an e-mail Sunday night. “Saturday afternoon, after working on the comments the judges had made the day before, the girls had their best performance to date, scoring the highest score they have this season.”
Mantyka and fellow coaches Vanessa Wolfram and Allison Vickers are pleased with what they see as a huge accomplishment for such a small team.
“We were told numerous times this weekend that we truly were an inspiration to both small teams and coaches alike, and that small can indeed be mighty,” Mantyka said, adding the five members of the MCHS Cheer Team continue to do the school proud. “They are the hardest working and most dedicated group of young ladies we have had the opportunity to work with. As coaches we feel very lucky to have these young ladies on our team, and could not be more proud of their accomplishments this season.”
This year the team have brought home three first-place finishes and other honours: Victoria School’s Cold snap Competition, Cheerfest, the North Central Zone banner, a Spirit Stick, and the Small Varsity Provincial Champion title.
The MCHS Cheer Team have one remaining competition this season, an event at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton Apr. 14.
