Morinville – Jessica Weatherly of Morinville will be one of the youth dart players to represent Alberta at the nationals. She placed 2nd in the Junior Female 2012 Youth Provincial Championships held Feb.28 in Calgary, winning her a spot on the 2012 Team Alberta Youth going to Thunder Bay, Ontario May 18-20 for the national competition.

Weatherly used to play darts years ago but had to stop for a while. She has been back playing for two years and has made a great comeback. It’s about fun and doing my best,” she said.

Five Morinville youth dart players competed in provincials with Weatherly: Raelyn Mills, Kirsten Floer, Sam Smith and his brother Douglas. There were only 23 participants at provincials this year; however, tensions were high as each participant was looking to earn a spot on the Alberta Provincial Youth Team.

The Morinville group brought home the Most Sporting Team trophy, an award Coach Georgina Davies said was in its third year of existence.

A history of competition

Weatherly is the latest Morinville dart athlete to bring pride to the community.

A member of the 2011 Team Alberta, Carrie Price, placed second in the Senior Female category at the Provincial Championships held in Edmonton that year. For the 2010 Team Alberta that went to Gander, Newfoundland, Price received bronze in the Senior Female Singles category and silver in the Senior Female Doubles with Morganne Boyce, as well as receiving silver in the Senior Mixed Doubles with Shaun Narain. Since 1995 there have been winners from Morinville in the Team Alberta Youth results.

Local youth travelled to St Hyacinthe, Quebec in 2009. In that year Price and Shaun Narain received bronze in the Seniors Mixed Doubles. Price also was the Senior Female Singles Champion and received the National Darts Federation of Canada (NDFC )Bursary Shoot of $500.
