Morinville – Peace Officer Erik Nikolson was busy handing out positive tickets in February. Two of those recipients went on to receive a certificate and $100 each for their role in keeping fellow students safe.

Ten-year-old Jordan Gurba and 11-year-old Joseph Holubowich were both recognized for volunteering their time as school crossing savety patrol members. Gurba is part of the patrol at Notre Dame Catholic Elementary School, and Holubowich is part of the patrol at École Georges P. Vanier School.

Both young men said they enjoy participating in the safety program. But the two positive ticket winners are not just interested in school safety. They’re interested in keeping their money safe, too. Both Gurba and Holubowich said they will likely put their $100 in the bank.

Positive Tickets are issued to youth 18 years of age and under. When an Officer observes someone obeying the law, the officer issues that person a positive ticket. The recipient drops off their positive ticket at the Morinville RCMP Detachment or at the town office. This entitles the ticket holder to a chance to win a monthly draw of $100.

The project is a partnership between the Morinville RCMP, Enforcement Services and Community Services. The Positive Ticketing Program focuses on finding and recognizing the positive things youth are doing in our community. The program is seen as a dynamic approach to crime prevention and increasing positive connections, while working with young citizens to reduce crime.
