Morinville-Legion and community members gathered to have their heads shaved for cancer at the Morinville Legion on Friday night. At the end of the evening the money raised for the Canadian Cancer Society Fundraise for Life event was more than $6,000 with a few more donations still coming in. Money collected came from participant sponsor sheets, a 50/50 draw, quilt raffle, food served that evening, and additional donations.

Event organizer Paula Mulbery said the cheque to the Cancer Society will be presented Apr. 13 at the Legion whne the final total is known.

Carrie and Anora Harney of Carrie’s Hair Design volunteered their time and equipment to shave the heads of the 10 volunteers, consisting of eight men and two women.

Steve Langston found the quickest path to a shaved head was right up the middle. Anora Harney of Carrie's Hair Design has a chuckle at his expense.
Each volunteer had a story to tell of how cancer has affected their lives and that of their family. Jillian Morrow cut her shoulder-length hair for her grandmother who died of pancreatic cancer eight years ago, and for a good family friend who succumbed to cancer in 2008. Bob Baker said he did it to raise money for cancer research because he lost a close friend and family member to cancer. Patricia Hounsell-Dickie had her hair shaved in memory of her daughter Natalie who died of a brain tumor at the age of 22. Phil Morrow said he wanted to shave his head for a few friends he lost to cancer at a really young age. Bruce Miedema, Justin Kuchta and Abram Giffin did it because it was a good thing to do and felt it was for a good cause. Kevin Wood had his long hair braided and carefully cut off. The hair to be made into will be given to the Wigs for Kids program.

Mulbery said the hairy event was a success and that she plans on making it an annual event.
