Morinville – Cancer took another step back Friday night when Paula Mulbery, who spearheaded the Fundraise for Life Program, and Legion 2nd Vice-President John Kennedy presented a cheque for $6,917 to Janice Arndt, Revenue Development Coordinator of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Arndt said the money stays in Alberta and goes towards where it is most needed. This includes research, support programs, and for support groups for families and patients who have been recently diagnosed who are then paired up with others that have travelled that path. It can be hard to relate to what they are going through and the support group allows them to talk about the cancer and their experience. The money can also go towards advocacy programs, including advocating for no smoking in the cars or parks where children are playing.

Donors have an option to choose where they want the money to go – for breast cancer, leukemia, research or cancer care in a specific group. Arndt said the goal for the Fundraise for Life Program for 2012 is $400,000 said Arndt.

During the presentation Kennedy said he was extremely pleased to have the special group of people who have proudly represented the branch and community in the recent Fundraise for Life campaign.
“The RCL is the largest service organization providing support to our military veterans and communities across this great country of ours,” Kennedy said. “With over 500,000 members in approximately 1,600 branches across the country, we strive to do a lot of little things to help our veterans and community. The Fundraise for Life was another small contribution to an extremely worthwhile cause. Almost everyone in this room has in some way been affected by the extremely cruel and brutal disease.”

Legion members had gathered to have their heads shaved for cancer at the Morinville Legion March 30. Friday night’s cheque presentation was a result of monies raised from the head shave as well as a 50/50 draw, quilt raffle, food served that evening, and additional donations.
