Nine performers in total took to the stage for Sunday afternoon’s Fiddle Gala, a performance that drew the largest audience of the three performances.

Morinville – Veteran Canadian fiddler Calvin Vollrath was back in town over the weekend, entertaining approximately 600 fiddle music fans in three separate shows. The musician, who grew up in Cardiff and cut his musical teeth in Morinville and surrounding area, released his 55th and 56th CDs at a CD release concert Saturday night: the aptly named The Homecoming and a second release titled Spring Creek.

Each year for the past 19 years Vollrath has held a CD release party, always somewhere in the Edmonton area. This time he decided to bring the show home after learning about the opening of the Morinville Community Cultural Centre.

Vollrath, who was joined by a large compliment of musicians from as close as Edmonton and as far away as Norway, provided two evenings and one afternoon of fiddle music for local, regional and out of province fans.

The weekend kicked off with a dinner and dance that attracted approximately 150. The numbers grew over the weekend with roughly 200 attending the Saturday night CD release show, and approximately 250 coming out to Sunday afternoon’s Fiddle Gala, a performance that explored Cape Breton, French Canadian, Metis, Ukrainian, and old time fiddle styles. Saturday night’s show saw Vollrath accompanied by an orchestra of three fiddlers, each a Canadian Grand Master Fiddle Champion.

  1. What a beautiful facility you have in Morinville. Laurie Stalker and the rest of her staff was an absolute treat to work with. I look forward to coming back and playing there again.

I got to see so many folks from many years ago. Thanks a bunch for coming out. There were many people from all across Canada in town for the weekend and were very impressed with the western hospitality we served up for them.

    Thank you Morinville.
