RCMP targeting young drivers in May

By Morinville News Staff

Morinville – RCMP members and road safety partners have their eyes peeled your young drivers this month as law enforcement continues its monthly focus under the Alberta Traffic Safety Plan.

Police will be stepping up their efforts to increase awareness and education of the dangers and common errors of young drivers.

RCMP say an average of 375 Canadians between the ages of 15 and 19 are killed in motor vehicle crashes each year and that almost 30,000 need treatment for their injuries. Male drivers between 18 and 19 are more likely to be involved in a casualty collision than any other age group.

Morinville RCMP ask young motorists to keep the following points in mind before they head out onto Alberta roadways:

  1. Never get behind the wheel or operate a motorized vehicle after drinking or using drugs.
  2. Obey the Rules of the Road. Speed limits and Traffic Control devices are for Safety.
  3. If they hold a Graduated Driver’s License (GDL) Obey the License Restrictions:
    • No Alcohol consumption – Immediate 30 day suspension
    • More passengers than seat belts – $100 fine and two demerit points
    • No Driving after midnight (learners only) – $100 fine and two demerit points
    • No accompanying driver (learners Only) – $200 fine and two demerit points
