From the Desk of the Fire Chief

Spring is here, it’s time to put away the snow shovels and get at the annual ritual of “spring cleanup” both inside and outside. While going through your home and yard, it is a good time to check for these unsafe conditions:

Inside the home: de-clutter all the “stuff” that has a way of collecting and piling up over the winter. Vacuum the dust off your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and change the batteries; when doing laundry, clean the actual exhaust vents or dryer hose that leads to the outside; look for and replace any frayed or damaged appliance cords, wiring, fuses or breakers.

In the garage or carport: remove leaves, trash, any piles of papers for recycling and old oily rags you may have stored. Ensure any flammable liquids and home chemicals are clearly marked, stored in safe containers and away from any heat source as well as children and pets.

In the yard: cut and clear away dry/dead vegetation in your yard and from within 20 feet of your house. Inspect your propane hose on your barbeque for any leaks. Ensure your barbeque is 10 to 15 feet away from your house when you use it.
