Morinville – It was a terrific two days of track at the Provincial Track & Field Championships at Foote Field in Edmonton June 1 and 2. Our MCHS team was not large but they were a force! The bench mark for Provincials is usually a top 8 finish. Top 8 is considered a fantastic result due to the strong competitive level of the athletes and the fact many track athletes do track as a main sport with the hopes of full ride US university scholarship or future Canadian National/Olympic team membership.

Leading the way for the WOLVES was grade 12 student Chris Auger who won a Silver medal in the Senior Boys Javelin with a throw of 48.98 on Friday. This was a personal best for Chris by 2.41 metres (his zone winning throw was 46.57m)…talk about rising to the occasion. The drama of Provincial competition was very evident in Chris’ event as he faulted on his first two throws – all 16 competitors have three throws, then the top eight competitors stay to throw three more times with the best of the six throws being counted. On his 3rd throw it was “put out or go home” for Chris. He focused, prepared then pulled off an impressive throw of 48.98m which put him in second place where he stayed for the remainder of the event. Talk about coming through under pressure…what a great kid!

The next day young Jordan Rooke was in the hunt for his first medal in the Intermediate boys Javelin with a personal best throw of 44.29m (Jordan’s zone winning throw was 41.55m). Jordan was sitting in 3rd spot for a Bronze medal until the 3rd last competitor bumped Jordan from medal contention and into 4th place….the darn thing is this is the second year in a row Jordan has come back from provincials with a 4th place finish in Javelin…Jordan’s motto is just like Toronto Maple Leaf fans…..”just wait until next year!” But unlike the Leafs, I like Jordan’s chance to medal next year.

As well MCHS track newbie Arinn Young came away with a very impressive 4th place finish in Junior Women’s shotput. Arinn was a late addition to our team but showed great composure and athletic prowess…Arinn was not intimidated at all by the whole event and also threw a personal best of 9.24m (her zone throw was 8.59m). Arinn will be a rising star in this event for the next two years.

As a team our MCHS WOLVES finished in 17th spot (out of 45 schools) in 3A schools, not bad for a rebuilding year. We were actually in 10th place until relays, but slipped as we had no relay teams this year. In the past years relays have been a strong part of our team, so instead of moving up from 10th we went down some spots.

Here are the Provincial Results for the kids.
Chris Auger 2nd Senior Javelin 48.98M PB
Jordan Rooke 4th Inter. Javelin 44.24M PB
Arinn Young 4th Junior Shotput 9.29M PB
Jordan Rooke 6th Inter. Discus 33.6M PB
Becca Dubord 10th Senior High Jump 1.40M PB (equalled)
Angeline Charrois 10th Junior Long Jump 4.45M PB
Josh Lane 11th Junior Long Jump 5,42
Katrina Lessard 13th Inter. 800M 2:52.48 PB
Carrie Mossey 13th Inter. Long Jump 4.23 PB
Angeline Charrois 13th Junior 100M 14.10 PB (equalled)

If you see them give them a pat on the back…they deserve it.
