Sturgeon County – Morinville RCMP responded to a break, enter and theft Thursday afternoon at a rural residence in the area of Highway 779 and Township Road 545. The break-in, which saw the theft of electronics and jewellery was the fourth such break-in in the detachment area since June 20.
In last Thursday’s break-in, the thieves gained access to the home by kicking in the front door.
Police say surrounding detachments have also noticed an increase in rural daytime break and enters. They believe thieves are driving around looking for empty houses, knocking on doors to confirm the house is empty.
RCMP are asking rural residents to look out for themselves and their neighbours, and to be on the lookout for strange vehicles pulling into driveways. Tell-tale signs include vehicles pulling in and leaving quickly or strangers knocking on your door and excusing themselves with an excuse of being at the wrong address if you answer.
Police are asking those who witness strange vehicles or people to try and note the descriptions of the people as well as the vehicles and, if possible, obtain a license plate. They also recommend letting trusted neighbours know when you will be out of the house.
