Legal School held their Meet the Staff Night and Grand Opening of the School Playground on Thursday night. More than 150 parents, guests and students were in attendance for the barbecue and opening.

John Kuby, President of Playworks, said the three-story equipment is the second that his company has built in Alberta. “It’s certainly a unique configuration,” he said.

Legal School Principal Raymonde Roulston said the evening celebrated a five-year journey of hard work. “The students at Legal School and the community of Legal are enjoying this new structure and are thankful to all those involved in the project,” he said.

For the equipment’s main structure they could pick and choose pieces they wanted from the company. They have four slides and other interactive stations throughout the structure, including a soccer swing set and a traditional swing set. The structure stands on top of a pour-in-place rubber safety surface. The entire project, estimated at $200,000 was made possible through sponsorship and donations.

The five-year project, headed by the Friends of the Legal School, came together as a result of the countless hours of volunteer work, as well as assistance from the Town of Legal and local businesses.

Funds from the Small Town Saturday Night concert sponsored by Travel Alberta and Big Valley Jamboree significantly contributed to the successful completion of the project. $95,000 was raised from the concert.

Under the direction of Helene Goian, the Friends of the Legal School saw a need, had a dream and, over the years, held numerous fundraising events to achieve that dream.

“To think, we have a population of about 1,200 and we beat out towns with a population of 12,000,” Golan said of the recent Small Town Saturday Night competition. “ I think we deserve a huge pat on the back for that.”
