Morinville – Just prior to his first council meeting Monday night, Morinville Town Council’s newest member was sworn in by Barrhead-Morinville-Westlock MLA Maureen Kubinec.

Sheldon Fingler, who won the Sept. 20 municipal by-election with 263 votes, replaces former Morinville Town Council member Ben Van de Walle who stepped down July 16 after being diagnosed with Lukemia.

Fingler’s swearing in ceremony began with a procession that included a piper, members of the Morinville RCMP Detachment, Morinville Fire Department, MLA Kubinek, and Fingler himself. The new councillor’s swearing in ceremony was observed by his wife, children, parents, and friends.

Councillor Fingler and the rest of Council will be attending the Alberta Urban Municipalities Association (AUMA) annual convention Sept. 26 to 28. This year’s gathering takes place in Edmonton and is opportunity for Council and Administration to learn about grant funding opportunities, new initiatives being undertaken by communities in the province and affords them the opportunity to network and lobby on behalf of the municipality.
